WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Pfizer Inc. said Thursday that it will pay $1.6 billion in fines and penalties for illegal transactions related to Viagra, Pfizer Inc. said, though the drug company did not disclose the specifics of its settlement with the Food and Drug Administration.
Pfizer said its settlements with the FDA resulted in the FDA having a stronger duty to monitor and evaluate the use of Viagra, which is made by Lilly and GlaxoSmithKline.
The settlement calls for Pfizer to pay a total of $1.6 billion, which is not included in the $1.5 billion fine, Pfizer said.
The settlement was approved by a United States District Court judge on Wednesday.
Pfizer is still facing lawsuits over its erectile dysfunction drug and related erectile dysfunction drugs from several other states. Pfizer has been filing suit in the federal court in Los Angeles over the settlement, which it said was a violation of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
Pfizer is also facing lawsuits in other states over the sales of Viagra, the erectile dysfunction drug used by millions of men to treat erectile dysfunction. In October, Pfizer agreed to settle more than $50 million in civil litigation, including over the sale of Viagra, according to Bloomberg reports.
Pfizer, the world's largest maker of prescription drugs, has been one of the most successful companies in the world in the fight against erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer said it has filed suit against other U. S. companies to recover royalties and the sales of Viagra, the impotence drug manufactured by Pfizer, and related erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Levitra and Cialis, as well as other prescription drugs used to treat impotence.

Lechleiter said Pfizer's settlement is "generally accepted" and "not a result of illegal, unjustified sales of the drug," but the company has "expects to continue to work with the FDA to continue to monitor and evaluate the use of Viagra and its related drugs."
The settlement is part of Pfizer's effort to strengthen its relationship with the FDA, which had been at odds over Viagra and other drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The companies will continue to work with FDA officials to prevent possible violations of the Food and Drug Act, which requires that any drug sold to the agency be approved by a medical professional.
Pfizer, based in Indianapolis, is a leading maker of prescription drugs, including Lipitor, Zoloft, Celexa, Celebrex, and Lyrica.
Pfizer is pleased that the company has agreed to settle lawsuits brought by the plaintiffs in a number of other lawsuits.
